nix mit 3 and out for romney

© 2012, Des Moines Register and Tribune Co.

    THE RESULTS:
Santorum finished ahead by 34 votes
MISSING DATA: 8 precincts’ numbers will never be certified
PARTY VERDICT: GOP official says, ‘It’s a split decision’

Rick Santorum – Final total: 29,839 Change: -168
Mitt Romney – Final total: 29,805 Change: -210

It’s a tie for the ages.

There are too many holes in the certified totals from the Iowa caucuses to know for certain who won, but Rick Santorum wound up with a 34-vote advantage.

    Kommentar bei Politico:

On points, Rick Santorum was actually the winner of the debate. Alas, debates are not won on points, but key moments.

Still, Santorum had his best debate of the season, and made clear he is not going to lie down for Gingrich, who is hoping upon hope that he will.

Santorum’s attacks were measured but sharp. He did what Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann could never quite figure out how to do - hit Gingrich and Romney hard, where they live, and sustain the pressure.

He cleverly yoked the two together repeatedly, especially on Romneycare. He went straight at Gingrich over the congressional check-kiting scandal of the early 1990s.

Santorum also leveled the charge that many Romney backers also have made about Gingrich — he’s unreliable, and there is the prospect of waking up to terrible headlines every morning if Gingrich is the GOP nominee. [...]

Santorum is every bit as good a debater as Gingrich — and in some ways, he’s better. He tends to make his points more cleanly and not get lost in the moment. That has not come through very often, but it did tonight.

I suppose I should say that obviously I find his politics twisted and dangerous. And there are certain ethical questions that no one has bothered to raise because he’s not really important enough. I literally wouldn’t vote for him if I were in a Twilight Zone episode and he were the only person on the ballot. And yet I think: if he were a liberal, he’d be pretty close to being my kind of guy. He’s consistent (you haven’t heard anyone accuse him of flip-flopping), he appears to care about the lives of working-class people, and while he mouths a few platitudes, you can tell he doesn’t like it. [...] I couldn’t care less whether Santorum lasts past South Carolina. What I do care about is seeing a spark of feeling in politics that goes beyond ideology and beyond even “commitment,” but into a place where our political selves and our real and full human selves collide.

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/01/duggar-family-to-stand-in-f or-santorum-112707.html

As they explain, they "decided to allow God to determine the number of children" they would have.

Rick Santorum is running on fumes. His is the curse of insurgent presidential campaigns—too much passion and too little sleep. [...] By any conventional measure, there is no Santorum campaign beyond his allied Super PAC and the bare infrastructure that makes his TV ads. Otherwise, it’s just the candidate winging it, as he did during the dark days in rural Iowa speaking to sparse crowds at the local Pizza Ranch. [...]

Santorum has had too little money and too little sleep to plan a coherent Michigan campaign against Romney. That is the problem when the candidate is running a seat-of-the-pants campaign long on improvisation and short of strategic coherence.

His father may not have served as governor or run a car company. But his grandfather did work briefly for a Detroit automaker before moving to Pennsylvania, where he worked as a coal-miner. That allows Santorum to talk about his life in a way that typical voters can understand – and appreciate. When Santorum mentioned that his grandfather stayed on the job until he was 72, one audience member let out a very audible "whoa."

Still, Santorum was connecting with his audience for another reason. The middle of Santorum’s speech was a riff about community – and the importance of getting past more materialistic needs. He reminded his audience that previous generations of Americans didn’t have so many gadgets or creature comforts: “They had nothing compared to what we have today.” But, Santorum went on to say, they had strong communities and neighborhoods. “They were rich in social capital, not rich in money.”
